Amarnath cave is a popular Hindu Shrine located in Jammu & Kashmir which is about 141km from Srinagar the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. The AmarnathYatra is open only for a short period of  time in summers because Amarnath Cave is surrounded by snowy mountains and the cave itself covered with snow. This time yatra begins on 29th June 2017 and will end on 7th August. So if you have registered for this yatra then this post may help you to know about 2 routes by which trek can be completed.

Different ways to reach Amarnath base camp

To reach at the base camp of Amarnath yatra you need to know the different ways to reach at Yatra:

  • By Air: Srinagar is  the nearest airport to reach Amarnath Yatra also in Srinagar here are  world famous sights to see, such as Dal Lake, Nagin Lake, Shankaracharya Temple and Mughal gardens like Shalimar, Nishat and Cheshma-shahi.  Srinagar is Known as “Heaven  on earth” and being the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, the city is well connected by air. Here are daily flights to Srinagar from Delhi and Jammu. Also on certain days these  flights also pickup passengers from Chandigarh and Ladakh.
  • By Rail: If you are going to travel through railway then Jammu is the nearest Railway Station which is the  winter Capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Also known as “CITY OF TEMPLES“, you  may visit old temples such as Raghunath Temple, Mahadev Mandir and other temples. Railway station is very well connected and there are lots of express train.
  • By Road: If you are planning to travel through the means of road transport.  Jammu and Srinagar are very well  connected through road. Buses and Taxies are  available for this part of the journey. These can be hired on daily as well as on full tour basis. By travelling through the means of road you will surely explore the beautiful places in between Jammu & Srinagar like Udhampur, Kud, Patnitop, Badharwah, etc and many more places that will excites your journey.

Pilgrims who is going to visit Amarnath Cave for them it is important to know the route taken to reach the Cave.

Pilgrims reach Cave through two routes which is either from Srinagar or from Pahalgham. Trek to Amarnath shrine   approximatelt takes 3 days to reach at Cave.

To reach at base camp here are easily availability of regular services provided to pilgrims by The State Road Transport Corporation and Private Transport Operators   from Jammu to Pahalgam and Baltal. Also privately hired taxis are available from Jammu & Kashmir.

Jammu – Baltal – Holy Cave:

It is route starts from Jammu, one has to go by road to Baltal which is 400km  via Sonamarg. pilgrims can also come to Srinagar by air and then travel to Balatal through taxi.  This route is the northern  route starts from Baltal and passes thorugh Domail, Barari, and Sangam which is  shorter than other route which  is just about 14km.  Only a very fit devotee can go and come back the same day after trekking for 28 kms. Also devotees can reach at cave with the help of ponies and palkies.

JAMMU – PAHALGAM – HOLY CAVE:

  • This is the another route that how pilgrims can reach at Cave. This route starts from Jammu, one has to go by road to Pahalgham which is 315 km and is 96 km from Srinagar and also pilgrims can come to Srinagar by air and then travel to Pahalgham trough taxi. Pahalgam is known all over the world for its beauty where many tourists came from different part of world also Srinagar is known as “Heaven Present On Earth“. This route is Southern route starts from Pahalgam to Chandanwari which is 16 km. To reach at Chandanwari there is facility of mini buses available for pilgrims.

  • As the Yatra proceedes further from Chandanwari pilgrims need to climb to  reach Pissu Top which  is said that to be the first to reach for darshan of Bhole Nath Shivshankar, here in this place there  was a war between Devtas and Rakshas and with the power of God Shiv Ji Devtas could kill the Rakshas.

  • After reaching at Pissu Top pilgrims move further and reach at Sheshnag which  is actually a mountain which derives its name from its Seven Peaks, resembling the heads of the mythical snake.
  • Aftrer Sheshnag pilgrims need to climb a steep height across Mahagunas Pass at 4276 mtrs.(14000 ft)  and then pilgrims need to trek  4.6 Km  and then trek downwards  to the meadow lands of Panjtarni at a height of 3657 mtrs (12000 ft). Here is suggesstion to all devotees who travel by this route is that due to cold harsh winds. Devotees  should carry their quota of  Woolens and Vaseline! Some Devotees  are also affected by deficiency of oxygen.

  • On the way to The Holy Cave pilgrims going for Darshan, must come across the Sangam of Amravati and Panjtarni rivers. Some pilgrims take bath at Amravati near the Holy Cave. Here are two smaller Shivlings one of Maa Parvati and other of Shri Ganesh.

 

  •  After having early Darshan of the Shiv ji at Holy Cave, pilgrims  can return to Panjtarni well in time the same day.
