This monument is the Tomb of Mughal emperor Humayun located  in Nizamuddin East near Yamuna River in Delhi . This monument was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It was also the first structure to use red sandstone at such a scale.

The construction of this monument was designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, a Persian architect chosen by Bega Begum and was  started in 1565 and was completed in 1572.In the year 1993, this tomb was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here you will see that there are several smaller monuments located in the west from the main tomb  of Humayun. The main tomb of the Emperor Humayun inside the complex, where you see  the graves of Bega Begum herself, Hamida Begum, and also Dara Shikoh who was the great-grandson of Humayun and son of the later Emperor Shah Jahan, as well as numerous other subsequent Mughals, including Emperor Jahandar Shah, Farrukhsiyar, Rafi Ul-Darjat, Rafi Ud-Daulat, Muhammad Kam Bakhsh and Alamgir II.

Ways to reach at Humayun Tomb at Delhi

To reach at Humayun Tomb The Nizammudin railway station in Delhi is the nearest to this site and if you take the Metro, then Jorbagh or Race Course stations (both on the Yellow line) are the nearest. From Nizamudin East you have to move ahead towards Mathura Road then you have to pass Hazrat Niazamuddin Bus Stop  and at Sabz Burj take the 3rd exit  pass Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station and on the left is Humayun’s Tomb.

Places to visit near the surroundings of Humayun Tomb:

Char Bagh Garden: This garden is the famous Persian style Garden with quadrilateral layout and was the first of its kind in the South Asia region in such a scale. This garden is divided into  four squares by a passage and two bisecting water channels reflecting the four rivers that flow in this garden.

Bu Halima’s Tomb and Garden: Visitors when firstly enters the complex from west, then first thing they enter a garden complex, known as Bu Halima’s Garden.

Afsarwala Tomb and mosque: You will see this tomb when you are standing at the southwest end of the complex. Inside this tomb you will see marble graves.

Nila Gumbad: It was built by Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, son of Bairam Khan. You will see this tomb when you are standing outside the boundary of the complex which is also known as “Blue Dome”.

Barber’s Tomb: You will see this tomb when you move towards the South East corner within the Char Bagh Garden. This tomb is also known as Nai- Ka- Gumbad.
