Here are the top 5 famous places not to miss while exploring USA by Kristin Cooke:

Post by Kristin Cooke: We live on an amazing planet with so much beauty in diversity. Over my travels these past few months, I have had the privilege of exploring more in my birth county, United States of America. It amazes me the variety of landscapes, lifestyles and cultures that span coast to coast. Many of us have an insatiable urge to keep traveling and marking off incredible destinations on our bucket lists. For those aiming to visit every country and absorb the rich heritage unique to each new location, then America might take you a bit of time. What you find in food, architecture and people vary greatly from North to South and from the East Coast to the West Coast and that is just our ‘continental’ landmass. We have incredible views and amazing people to experience further to the majestic North in Alaska and our exotic Western border, Hawaii and the beautiful Puerto Rico to the South.

If you are coming to visit America for the first time, and only have a few weeks to take in the whole experience. We certainly have our famous ‘Landmarks’. Places that are iconic to the American experience including The Statue of Liberty in New York, The Capital Building in Washington D.C., Hollywood and Disneyland in California…the list could go on and on. But then I thought how I like to travel. I live in this incredible country.

Here are the top 5 places according to my experience:
1) Savannah GA: Although a small town, Savannah is a romantic step back into time when America was finally prospering independently. Street after street of some of the most incredible homes commissioned by the upper echelon of society and a strategic city planning map with purposefully organized squares for community events there is so much to explore and experience. Savannah sweeps you up from the seedy far reaches where pirates and smugglers lurked to the elegant homes surrounding Forsyth Park on a journey that although tumultuous, is a part of America’s history and instrumental in shaping how we have evolved as a nation. Passionate locals are part of a myriad of tour options that will walk you through the history and iconic architecture of this beautiful town. Although it can be pricey, stay in the historic district of downtown Savannah. There are several Bed and Breakfasts, Inns and hotels that are quietly nestled in historic buildings all over the city. Apart from my pure joy of Savannah being an open container city and being able to pop in and out of various local restaurants and bars to order a cocktail ‘to go’ and keep on strolling, Savannah also offers one of the best representations of incredible Southern Cuisine.

2) Chicago IL
Chicago is an incredible city filled with impressive high rises, amazing cocktail and cuisine spots and endless options to get out an enjoy the city. Come in the spring, summer or fall for great activities both indoors and outside enjoying city life and lake side fun. I love staying downtown Chicago when I visit. So much is within easy walking distance. An architecture tour is an absolute must when visiting Chicago. The city offers so many incredible structures that have been designed by prominent architects that have impressive high rises all over the world. Chicago can boast several milestones in the competitive market of skyscraper design, any of the tours ranging from the free ones offered on foot by locals to the tours by boat, it is well worth your time to learn more about this innovative, forward thinking city. Millennium Park and Grant Park are both a true oasis amidst the concrete jungle. Lush greenery set against the lake sprinkled with the personal boats of locals out enjoying their city makes for a most picturesque afternoon. The parks also host events and concerts regularly that will truly add to your big city experience. Save your appetite for Chicago. Not only is the city known for her endless offerings of pizza…but several creative and innovative chefs and mixologists have established themselves in posh and swanky spots throughout the city. The arts are heavily celebrated and appreciated in Chicago as well. Historic theaters that still operate in all their grandeur and elegance of decades past with many of Broadway’s most popular shows plant themselves in Chicago for a bit. Chicago is definitely worth a visit when experiencing.

3) New Orleans LA
My recommendation for New Orleans stems from its rich and tumultuous history and amazing culinary scene. New Orleans has passed between French and Spanish rule before becoming part of the United States. The history of the French Quarter then the expansion of the Garden District and Treme alone takes you on a journey through part of America’s darker past, but the vivacity of the locals and sense of community that has survived and come together to be a stronger and successful city since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina makes New Orleans a great example of the American spirit. While Bourbon Street is certainly an iconic and famous destination in this town, the history of the city and her neighborhoods is the adventure. Experience the flavors of Cajun and Creole Cuisines as well as good old classic low country Southern Cuisine. The cocktails in New Orleans are also amazing and creative. Not only is NOLA the birthplace of the cocktail, but one of the most influential bartending events in the country is hosted in New Orleans, Tales of the Cocktail, where the best of the best come from around the world to learn about new techniques and better cocktail crafting ideas. New Orleans is also famous for their Mardi Gras celebration. If your first visit to New Orleans is to explore the French Quarter and her surrounding neighborhoods to dig into the rich history of New Orleans’ past and savor amazing cocktails and cuisine, I would not advise coming during Mardi Gras. The town is packed. And while Mardi Gras is insanely incredible to partake in and behold, the city is packed. Early November was an amazing time to visit the city. The temperature is pleasant which makes for ideal weather to explore New Orleans.

4) Louisville KY
Visiting Kentucky gives you just a sliver of what the heartland of America offers. Rolling hillsides of farmland, majestic mountains and some of the nicest people I have encountered on my travels. Louisville is also a great city to base yourself in for a glorious tour of some of the best bourbon distilleries in the country. Not only does the downtown area itself host distilleries, but many of the local bars are proud to be part of what is now called the Urban Bourbon Trail, where these fine establishments host hundreds of coveted labels of bourbons, with passionate bartenders that will gladly share their knowledge of the history of each meticulously distilled label. Old Louisville is a stroll down history lane. Dozens of elegant mansions have been lovingly preserved and restored to their original grandeur when the rich and mighty established their families in the mid to late 1800s as Louisville positioned itself on the map as one of the most prominent cities for industry. You can catch a glimpse of the rise of that “American Dream’ come to fruition in the homes surrounding Central Park and “Millionaires Row” just on the outskirts of downtown Louisville. Being nestled around farmland as far as the eye can see, Louisville also offers a growing foodie scene with more and more true farm to table, and locally sourced restaurants with talented chefs that will certainly surprise and delight. Not far from Louisville rise up the majestic Appalachian Mountains. While the true height and soul the mountains are really to the eastern end of the state, you can still make an easy day trip to several caves and trails to get out and enjoy the view.

5) Philadelphia PA
I adore Philadelphia. Maybe because of her instrumental part in America’s history, or perhaps more because of how as a city Philadelphia is evolving and growing. Its beautiful to see a city hold on to a small town feel and strong independent neighborhoods, but function as one big city, offering visitors not only a glimpse into the earliest path of Americas past, but into the future of our bustling cities, balancing preservation of the past and forward thinking in transportation, industry and cuisine. It was humbling to walk the cobblestone streets that our forefathers strolled along daily, perhaps contemplating what would be best for a new nation, or perhaps contemplating how best to grow their own endeavors, but either way what has resulted is a melting pot of nations and a beautiful balance of impressive architecture and a passionate people that proudly cling to their heritage. Philadelphia supports the arts in a major way. Whether it be musically, culinary or theatrically…you will be entertained in The City of Brotherly Love. This is truly a town to indulge in a show and to eat local in.
